Commonplace books, 1769-1795.

All volumes include information concerning William Cabell's service in the Virginia House of Burgesses, House of Delegates, and Senate; and as surveyor and justice of the peace in Amherst County, Va.; as well as agricultural operations in Amherst County, slave lists, and accounts (in particular newspaper subscriptions). In addition to the above, volume 2, 1770-1771, discusses the education of his sons; volume 5, 1774-1776, concerns Cabell's service in the Virginia conventions of 1774, 1775, and 1776 and on the Virginia Committee of Safety, and social and political conditions in Amherst County; volume 6, 1776-1777, concerns agricultural operations at Union Hill plantation in Amherst (now Nelson) County, Va., the Albemarle Iron Works in Albemarle County, Va., and salt; volume 8, 1779-1782, concerns Hampden- Sydney Academy (now Hampden-Sydney College), and agreements with overseers; and volume 9, 1783-1795, includes executions, 1751-1755, kept by Cabell as deputy sheriff in Albemarle County, Va.
